New strategy to decarbonise local authority vehicle fleets

New strategy to decarbonise local authority fleets

The local government sector has developed a new strategy to decarbonise its fleet of vehicles.

Local Authority Fleet – Strategy to Decarbonisation aims to provide a sectoral approach to assist and guide individual local authorities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and realise energy efficiency targets.

The strategy was developed by a Reimagining Transport in Local Government Working Group established by the County and City Management Association (CCMA).

Local government owns and operates the largest road fleet in Ireland and transport accounts for 26% of the sector’s emissions.

The new strategy provides considerations for both short-term and long-term planning, emphasising the Avoid, Shift, Improve approach, as promoted in the Climate action Plan 2023.

The Strategy includes two annexes, one highlighting case studies of decarbonisation practices in local authorities and the other providing a resource toolkit with information to assist in navigating the range of issues related to decarbonisation, for example, alternative fuels, vehicle availability, conversion factors and more.
